The campaign to succeed Jane Kim in the district that includes South of Market, the Tenderloin, Mission Bay and Treasure Island has emerged as perhaps the most substantive and robust in the November election. The District Six race features three strong candidates: Matt Haney, a member of the Board of Education, former Planning Commissioner Christine Johnson and housing advocate Sonja Trauss.
Johnson stands out in the field for the original thought and specificity she applies to an array of issues facing the city generally and the district specifically. A good example was the question of how to bring life to the central Market Street area that seems to defy revitalization. Johnson suggested that the retail spaces are simply too large to appeal to retailers and restaurants, and city codes prevent them from being subdivided. A change in code would be a priority for her. She also outlined plans for increasing the presence of police and homeless outreach teams in that troubled stretch of Market.
